Out of the Barn for Paint Party Friday


5 x 7 Acrylic



I once walked into my daughter’s high school art classroom and on the table was a still life set up.  It wasn’t the usual apples or pears, far from it.  There on the table was an internal part of a car motor.  Don’t’ ask me what it was because to this day I couldn’t tell you.  All I know was that it was metal with a lot of little wires, screws, and totally unidentifiable metal parts.

 The drawings that resulted from this still life were quite frankly…awesome.  It’s all about thinking outside the box.  Maybe no one would want to buy a painting of a transmission (except perhaps someone who works for AAmco) but it wasn’t about saleable art.  It was about  challenging oneself.  Isn't this why we paint?

So I figured I would set that odd thing on my imaginary table and paint something out of my field of capability.  I’ve painted many horses in my time, this time I painted something with a bit more Horsepower.  My entry to Paint Party Friday is a departure from the barn and into the garage.  Please visit Paint Party Friday to see all the wonderful art and artists to be found right here…PAINT PARTY FRIDAY

    This is so fantastic ~I love what you do with acrylics. The reflections under the car are fantastic.

    Wouldn't a boy love this in his room.?

    Whoa! So cool! My son loves it. It's a Camaro isn't it? Great job and I love the colors. I'll bet this is very sellable ;) Good for you for getting out of your comfort zone. Very nice!

    Great job. I love this practice of painting something outside of the box and I bet it was incredible to see what the others came up with for the motor.

    You are an amazingly talented individual and I'm sure you can paint anything you want to. I love the way you painted the reflection of the colors from that beautiful paint job on the car. Happy PPF.

    I love it, Crystal. Excellent job on a difficult, detailed subject. Great background and reflection, too. I've done a few cars/trucks in my time...handpainted on tshirts, lol. Someone commented that yours was watercolor and my heart jumped a bit until I checked the info under the pic!! Kathryn

    You make going from horses to horsepower look so easy... wonderful!

    My most favorite painting that I ever created was an extreme close-up of a safety pin... you just never know :)

    I used to know someone who painted matchsticks and I thought it was a bit OCD but maybe she was just painting outside her own box (pun not intended!)

    Guess I need to explain the car...This race car belongs to a friend of my daughters. She was the one who put all the fancy striping and lettering on the car. I just thought it would be something that I've never painted before. Thanks for all your kind comments! :-)
