What is your favorite scary movie? That is the question I pose to you. Of course if you ask it of me I doubt I would be able to give you a real answer. You see I have never really seen a scary movie, not straight on anyway. The thing is, the only way I can watch a scary movie is through some sort of screen. At home I watch them through an afghan. At the movies I watch them through my sweater. (Yes I wear a sweater to a scary movie even in summer heat) And when the action gets a bit too intense I close my eyes and block it all out and depend upon my ears to give me a clue as to what has happened. It doesn’t matter that the 8 year old sitting two rows in front of me sits with rapt attention, I am watching safely under a gauze of yarn and wool.
This past weekend my husband and I went to see "The woman in black." a gothic type ghost story. It was his choice of course since I would much rather have seen something a bit lighter. Don't ask me for a review because I would have to give you a choppy one, since most of the time I was buried under my sweater with my eyes tightly closed. Even through this protection, I jumped out of my seat when someone screamed or the music blared at a critical moment. And my husband sat stoically next to me unaffected.

I think it all started when I was a kid. My mother would force me to visit my grandmother who lived in an old Victorian house that seemed as if it was a block long. It had creepy hallways, turrets and spiral staircases. All the weather had to do was add a thunderstorm and my imagination would run away with me screaming down those halls. If ever there was a place that a ghost could call home, that was it!
One such time, while visiting my grandmother I went with a friend in the neighborhood to a matinee to see, of all things…”The blob.” The movie got to the part where the gook rolled down the stick and then it jumped… and so did I-- right out of my seat and out of the theater. Needless to say my friend followed none too happy.
So in order to keep my scare loving friends, I needed to figure out a way to watch, but not watch, hence the burrow viewing.
So what is your favorite scary movie? And do you watch it straight on or do you use my sheltered method?
I am not a friend of scary movies, so I can understand why you watch through your sweater! Valerie
ReplyDeleteNot overly fond of scary movies...years ago I watched The Omen on TV! Wasn't overly thrilled when a guy's head was wacked off with a sheet of plate glass! I was always going to watch Rosemary's Baby...but thankfully never got around to it (read the book, apparently my imagination isn't quite as scary as Hollywood's)! Watching through a sweater works for me!
ReplyDeleteI am not a scary movie fan, but the "Blair Witch Project" scared the heck out of me!!!
ReplyDeleteWhen I was a girl I had my afghan too. And if I didn't want to talk to anyone I would put the afghan over my head, so my parents knew I didn't want to talk to them (this is when I was 3is years old). But what they didn't realize (or so I thought) was I could still watch TV through my afghan!! I really thought I was the smartest person in the world!!

I don't have a favorite because I'm a big chicken, I like your style, though,, hiding under a sweater, it would take more than sweater for me though,
ReplyDeleteCrystal, your grandmother's house sounds divine! Gotta love those old Victorian houses.
ReplyDeleteMy all-time favorite horror movie is the 1974 horror film titled "The House of Seven Corpses" featuring John Ireland and John Carradine. It's shot in this old mansion where a film crew is trying to make a scary movie.
ha ha love that you watch through your sweater!
ReplyDeleteI don't watch scary movies anymore - I used to before my kids were born...but...i just can't anymore! lol!
I loved scary movies as a kid, although no one in particular jumps out at me (pun intended!). What always scared me was the sound...so while I had to watch, I always plugged my ears! Not so much a fan of them anymore.
ReplyDeletePsycho! I crings just thinking of it.
ReplyDeleteI actually am not usually scared by scary movies. Monster movies, Exorcist, slashers and such--nope--do nothing for me--calm as a cucumber. The only one that ever made me jump at a movie theater (or at home for that matter) was Wait Until Dark with Audrey Hepburn. I much prefer a phycological thriller or something that you could imagine actually happening...like in Wait Until Dark. And even then most of them don't scare me so I can't say I have a favorite.
ReplyDeleteI love how you watch through fabric of some kind, though. Smart! :)
I don't watch scary movies, a scarf wouldn't be enough for me, maybe with earmuffs too! lol, you are a good sport to go.
ReplyDeleteI don't like scary movies, and I think my fear started very young too. My sister took me to see a movie when she was babysitting me (she is six years older) and had her license and took and friends and ME to a drive in theatre where "The Were Wolf" was playing...I was under the back seat most of time I think. She made me promise never to tell our parents.
ReplyDeleteExperience shared on watching different instance of scary movie.
ReplyDeleteCrystal, you remind me of my mom! LOL! Actually, the scary movies, that really get my mind going, are ones to do with spirits and ghosts, taking over people's bodies! That gets me! The cutting up people ones, don't really. I like scary movies! I can't pin point my favorite! I want to go see The Woman In Black! Too bad you couldn't give us a review! Have a great day ;o) Oh, keep warm with that sweater ;o) LOL!
ReplyDeleteNice drawing, fabric delicious to watch movies through it.
ReplyDeleteI haven't watched a scary movie in a long time, but the first one that came to mind was Sleeping With The Enemy with Julia Roberts. Eeeek. ha.
ReplyDeleteOutright Horror doesn't bother me. Subtle Horror does. Still remember Wait Until Dark as a classic.
ReplyDeleteHi Crystal,
ReplyDeleteI remember The Blob! lol]
Mine would be The Shining with Jack Nicholson! Heeeeere's Johnny did me in. lol

For me, watching Wales play in the rugby Six Nations is far too scary - they turned the game around and won in the final 20 secs last Sunday! - I keep finding excuses to leave the room!!!
ReplyDeleteNOT a fan of scary movies. If I have to endure one, it's the duck-and-tuck method. My family is less likely to take me nowadays, my constant questions and loud screams seem to lessen their enjoyment.

I do love a psychological thriller, but not a big fan of horror and gore. I turn my head or look at the floor or put my hand in front of my eyes during any killing or blood, lol. My favorite movies are Somewhere in Time and Michael. I do like ghost stories...when the ghost is nice! =) Kathryn
