What is wrong with one l---o---n---g book?

Lately trilogies are everywhere. I mean why make one movie when you can make three or even four?  And books have gotten that way as well. Generally I don’t like trilogies in my books, unless all of them are already in print.  I didn’t read the Twilight series until all the books were available.  And I never started reading Harry Potter or the Hunger games until the series was complete.

Recently I read a book called “The Passage” and loved every page, except that it didn’t end.  I later discover it is, in fact, part of a trilogy!!!!  EEEK and the second one is not in print as yet!  This book weighing in at almost 800 pages could have been a trilogy in itself.

I guess it is the modern way to write, but just for fun could you imagine “War and Peace” being three books, “War”, “Peace, and “Whatever?”  Or, maybe “Atlas shrugged” not once but three times?

I’m thinking that some of this trilogy mania has to do with the dollar.  I mean if you are selling a thick slice of cake for $4.00 and you cut it into thirds and sell each piece for $2.00 you are making more money and everybody thinks they are getting a deal.

As for me, I’m hoping that since the kindle and other e-readers are becoming so popular and are usually much more reasonably priced, that maybe it will bring about the resurgence of oh-so heavy thick as a brick tomes.  All in one volume!

  1. You are right, but there are even trilogies for Kindle! I think some authors get paid by number of pages, or perhaps by weight....and perhaps it just sounds better to say you have written 3 books....? Valerie

  3. My husband reads a lot of sci-fy and they seem to be never ending series. He suffers from the same dilema, having to wait for the next book. One of the series he reads the author died before the series was completed!

  10. I've been rereading Roger Zelazny's The Great Book of Amber which is actually 10 books turned into one. It's thick!! If they'd done the same to the Twilight series or the Potter books, can you imagine trying to curl up on the sofa with a book the size it would have to be? I do agree that giving us a story in installments can be very cruel when you've got to wait a year or more to get the next little bit. Love the drawing. Hugs

  11. The books painting is fantastic. Such talent! As for sequels, it's rather like old-fashioned soap operas, really. I usually get tired of the characters in a sequel of books after about the 3rd book.

  12. I love that book painting! And as for the trilogy trend, you made me chuckle. I hadn't really thought about it much but I bet you're right about the money. Or maybe shorter attention spans so they break up the books. Interesting to think about.

  13. I like to get into books when the series is. I hbcomplete too, otherwise it's too agonizing to wait for the next one! I have a Kobo reader and have bought a few bundle deals for $8 or so. I haven't heard of The Passage, but I'll put it on my list!
