Hummingbird in colored pencil |
It’s time! The hummingbirds
are back and it’s time to fill all the feeders. I love watching these tiny little helicopters as they flit
and fly around the yard. Don’t buy
the pre-made solutions, though. Honestly, the hummers don’t like that store
bought stuff. It’s easy and cheaper
to make nectar right in your own kitchen
Hummingbird nectar:
In a small pot boil 4 parts water to 1 part cane sugar
(This equates to 4 cups of water and 1 cup of sugar, but until I get a large amount of hummers, I usually just mix up 2 cups of water with ½ cup of sugar)
Let cool and fill the feeders.
Store any unused nectar in the refrigerator
There is no need to add any food coloring. The hummers don’t care if it’s clear or
colored. Don’t use honey and clean
and refill your feeders weekly.
what a beauty, it seems forever since I made this recipe, you captured the bird so well, the eye is beautiful.
ReplyDeleteI have had to start a new blog, I hope you will find me, I called it when the bough broke,
How great to have humming birds. We don't have them over here, but I have one hyper-active tit just now who it trying to fly like one, so funny! Valerie
ReplyDeleteI never thought about them liking the store kind! But, I also get very few hummingbirds!!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the info! And your shading on the hummingbird piece makes it look alive!

oh is that all it takes to make nectar? Wonderful tip, and beautiful hummingbird!
ReplyDeleteI love our hummers. I've been making the nectar for years, and my recipe is almost identical to yours.
ReplyDeleteI had such a sweet experience the other day. My cousin brought over a vacated humming bird nest. OH my...it's so so tiny, and built so so soft. I just love it. I've always liked bird nests, and am amazed at the work that goes into them.
Nice job on the hummingbird! :)
ReplyDeleteGreat hummingbird! We don't feed them here (have lots of flowers) Being surrounded by woods are bug population is already overwhelming without adding ants to the mix.
ReplyDeleteI've only seen a few hummingbirds that actually looked like large striped bumblebees. Maybe I should get a feeder to attract more.
ReplyDeleteJust like Craft Attack, I saw a house sparrow trying to hover like a humming bird over my kitchen window boxes earlier this week! Quite an exciting event!!!
ReplyDeleteGreat information Crystal, thank you ;o)
ReplyDeleteLove the colored pencil drawing. I haven't seen any humming birds here yet but will whip up a batch of nectar for the feeder as soon as they do arrive. Have a great week. Hugs
