This afternoon I decided to do some chores around the house. My car was in need of vacuuming and the day was pretty comfortable with no humidity so I figured it would be a perfect time. I opened the garage doors to get some air while I worked.
I started vacuuming and when I put the hose under one seat I sucked up a plastic bag by mistake…”Darn, I thought when the vacuum stopped working, I’ve broken it.” At that very moment the shaking started which I am citing as the reason why I couldn’t comprehend what was happening. We were experiencing an earthquake and I thought that I had done something that was causing some sort of explosion.
My confusion turned to realization when the shaking got so loud that I was afraid the roof was going to cave in on me. Terrorists? I was dumbfounded, scared, and really at a loss. Ok, cut me some slack here, I have lived in Va. all my life and it is not exactly an area prone to earthquakes. In fact they said on the news that the last time an earthquake of this magnitude happened here was in the 1800’s.
The phones were out and neighbors were out on the street, and I soon discovered that it was in fact, an earthquake—and a 5.9 one too!!! I live probably 30 miles from the epicenter and while no one was hurt that I know of, there is a lot of minor damage and breakage.
At my store (where I wasn’t today) I am told the building shook and stuff flew off the shelves. My sister who was working at the time and four customers ran outside. Fortunately no one was hurt, just a lot of picking up to do.
Guess I am pretty lucky losing just a few breakables.
All I can say is, how about a new catch phrase?
GOT GLUE?
wow thats scary,, so glad you're OK,, pretty frightening though!
ReplyDeleteOh my Crystal, I am so glad you and your loved ones are all safe. They are saying the tremors were felt here in Maine too but I can't say I noticed anything except that my TV acted funny for a little while but it usually does that when I'm trying to watch General Hospital (something I consider a treat). So it seemed par for the course. Again, I am so glad you are safe.
ReplyDeleteThat was a pretty big one, too! Glad you are save!
ReplyDeleteps ~ our power went out but I didn't feel any shaking...and that's here in Ohio!
ReplyDeleteOoh Crystal.. I was reading about the earthquakes and hurricane Irene heading along the east coast... sooo glad you are ok.
ReplyDeleteKeep safe

Hey Crystal, we had the earthquake too! It traveled right up to Canada. Where I live, we only had the shaking, but some other areas had damage. Glad you are ok ;o)
ReplyDeleteYikes! I'm glad you're okay.
ReplyDeleteMy Blog

ReplyDeleteCrystal,
ReplyDeleteDo you know, I thought of you yesterday!!! When I was watching the news as to where it hit, you were the first person that popped into my head! Aw, glad you are ok - HUGS! I don't blame you for being scared....there were tremors up here....but nothing broken. next, we brace for the hurricane! YIKES
So glad you are okay and no major, MAJOR damage. I can ONLY imagine what it must have been like your way. Stay safe.
ReplyDeleteGlad to hear you're okay and there was only minor damages. Now you need to batten down the hatches against the hurricane and be safe.
ReplyDeleteCrystal, I'm sorry you had stuff break. My BP, which is normal, was at 187/89 just after all the shaking stopped. I have never been more scared in my life. And as you say, it was confusing. Our whole house was shaking about but we didn't think earthquake. Duh! Next time, if it ever happens, we will recognize what is going on. I'm just a mile south of the river and slightly se of the epicenter. I figured about 40 miles away.
ReplyDeleteThank goodness you are ok! I felt it all the way up here in New York!
ReplyDeleteGlad you're okay...as a California resident we're used to the rocking and rolling but 5.9 is big...I was in a similar sized one in the 1970's and it was SCARY....have you had any aftershocks?
ReplyDeleteThank goodness you are all safe. A very scary time. xx
ReplyDeleteGot glue I well know. Growing up in both Japan and California, earthquakes were a way of life. Went through several in California that were big-7.1 when I was in college. Still would rather have earthquakes than tornadoes.
ReplyDeleteKalimera Crystal ! How scary I hate earthquakes we have had quite a few here in Thessaloniki and know how frightening they can be glad to hear that you are ok and have only minor damage, but you didn't day how the vacuum is !!!. I received your wonderful piece of art a few days ago but had no internet so couldn't post it, check out my blog when you have time.
ReplyDeleteIt is so gorgeous and I will treasure it always.
