"The First Mate" for PPF

"First Mate" acrylic

My husband loves his boat.  He loves boating.  Me, I am not into boating all that much. I go, because marriage involves give and take.  He’s gone to Horse shows, art galleries, and chic flicks with me, so boating is my give.

When we bought the boat my husband talked me into taking a Coast guard class. This class convened once a week for several weeks.  I don’t remember how many weeks exactly.  It think I blocked out that memory, but I do know it was quite a few.

I have sat through many a boring college class, and listened to monotone professors drone on and on about World War 2, but this class took the cake.  Husband dear loved it…guess it’s a guy thing.
.
The class was separated into two-parts with the first being rules, regulations, safety, and techniques while the second part involved navigation and mapping.  I sat through the part one, doodling and twiddling my thumbs and passed the test with flying colors earning my certification.  I guess something must have sunk in.  When the navigation part started, however, I just had to grab my purse, kiss my husband goodbye and go shopping while he learned how to find his way back without a GPS. (Which he uses exclusively now by the way)

We go boating at least once a week if it isn’t raining.  I still don’t love it.  The waves rock a bit too much when you are zipping along.  I bounce up and down in the seats, and being as I am not exactly small-breasted, parts of me are bouncing that just shouldn’t be bouncing…I am thinking this can’t be good.  Somebody might get hurt.

There is, however, another female in the house who just loves to go boating, and it just happens to be a four legged one. When my dog, Maddy sees my husband getting the cooler out and heading for the truck she is right at his heels. So my husband has a first mate…guess it’s not me.

I am linking this post to Paint Party Friday, which is so much fun that you should join in.  If nothing else just go visit all the wonderful artist and art to be found right here….PAINT PARTY FRIDAY

That is a beautiful painting of your husband's first mate! I'm not into boating either as I tend to get motion sick--but I will cruise if it gets me to where I want to go!

Unbelievable painting of something you dislike doing. I love it!
Maddy does seem to love the adventure.

She looks so excited to be first mate! Love it! At least your hubby isn't into hunting like mine. There is NOTHING more boring than sitting in the woods forever, not being able to talk or move or make noise. Just sit. Boring! We won't even talk about how exciting it is if something actually comes along that you can shoot at, or the huge mess involved afterward if you happen to hit it. Ugh. A couple times was plenty enough for me.

Wow, Crystal, this piece is awesome! I have to confess that I love being on a liesurely boat ride, especially on the ocean. Though I agree with you...not a fan of the rough and bouncy ride! Kathryn

Maddy is adorable! You can tell in the way that you depicted her, that she loves boating. I'm not a water person and can relate to your trepidations. But it is so good of you to support your husdand. Sounds like a very generous relationship : )

Maddy is really well done. I have to admit that the last time I went boating I hung my head over the edge more than I could hold it up. I have not wanted to go much since.

Love the painting, it's great! haven't been on a boat in years; used to ski with my boy friend in HS; but not since. Happy PPF!

I love your painting. I don't mind boating if I can drive the boat and decide what part of the river we will see. I guess I'm not a good passenger.

Loved your story and can sympathise. I live with the Atlantic Ocean on the left and the Indian Ocean on the right and don't go anywhere on the water! Your little Maddy painting is wonderful.

Kristin Dudish said...

This painting is spectacular! And the accompanying story is wonderful :) You're a good sport...which makes me think - have you tried sports bras while boating?... for particularly vigorous activity I double 'em up!

Good luck and try not to get a black eye! ha!

Some things are just guy things! My husband loves ham radio and wanted me to get my licence, but I just couldn't work up the enthusiasm! Maddy is adorable though :-)

This is absolutely gorgeous, Crystal! LOVE it! Like you, I don't love the boating part. Since I can't swim, I'm not likely to be in a boat anytime soon. ;)

Great "give and take" story and gorgeous first mate. :)

This is such a beautiful painting... Maddy looks like she's smiling. My give is mountain bike riding once a week. Once I'm out there, I like it, but it's sooo hard. My husband usually gives me pushes on the way home. :)
